National Medical & Wellness Tourism Promotion Board’s First Meeting: What Happened
23 Sep, 2016

As we all know, the first meeting of the newly formed National Medical & Wellness Tourism Promotion Board took place on January 13th, Wednesday, 2016. This meeting was chaired by Mahesh Sharma, MoS Tourism. A lot of issues came up for discussion since it was the first meeting under the newly constituted formed. It was agreed that the country hosted many Medicare and healthcare systems; the need was to connect them all jointly. This would ensure uniformity for tourists who visited our country for medical treatment.
So what would this mean? A single-window facility will be set up. This facility would connect all the necessary systems in the country, ensuring flexible travel and hassle-free treatment. Foreign tourists will also be issued prepaid activated SIM cards to ensure that they’re well-connected and there’s a sense of security. E-visa counters might also be on immediate agenda. To support these initiatives with a digital backing, we might also see a web portal that showcases the best healthcare facilities that the country has to offer.
Mr. Sharma said, “the government will act as a facilitator and the private sector will lead the project”. It was concluded that the private and public sector would have to work jointly to facilitate proper growth. A seed capital of 2 crore was sanctioned by the government for the Board. Others in attendance were Dr Naresh Trehan, Dr Devi Shetty, Baba Ramdev’s aide Balakrishan, etc. The next few meetings of the board would see more conclusive decisions. More such steps by the board will only be welcomed by the Medical Tourism sector.
