Overview

A knee replacement also referred to as knee arthroplastyis more precisely a knee "resurfacing" procedure. It is only the surface of the bones that is actually replaced.

• Osteoarthritis - Thistype of arthritis is what is referred to as age-related "wear and tear". The knee replacement procedure involves four steps. First and foremost, the bone is prepared by removing the damaged cartilage surfaces as well as a small portion of the underlying bone. Then metal implants are used to replace the removed cartilage and bone by either cementing or press-fitting into the bone. Depending on the case, the patella is resurfaced with a plastic button. Lastly, between the metal components a medical-grade spacer is inserted that creates a gliding surface which is smooth.
